Stats on Foster Children
The numbers for children that are not living at home are staggering. There are over 510,000 children in foster care nationwide as of FY2006. (The AFCARS Report).
In Massachusetts:
- 12,197 children are in foster care (under the age of 23)
- 56% of them experience 3 or more foster care placements
- 20% live in group care or institutional settings.
These numbers come from the Kids Are Waiting organization. To see the numbers for your state select it from the pulldown menu on their Massachusetts page.
If this isn’t enough, here are other Massachusetts numbers to be aware of:
- 28,237 children are abused
- 42,552 children in the Department of Social Services (DSS) caseload
These numbers are from the DSS 2007 report.
